This is a Djembe, which are traditional hand percussion instruments, from the Numu tribe in west
Africa. The term "djembe" can be roughly translated into "everyone gather together in peace. " This instrument was played mostly at celebrations and has a quite uplifting sound. In tribal life, only certain people are authorized to play this instrument but sadly I have not had the spare time (or money) for a trip to Guinea Conakry to get permission from the Numu. I have been playing the Djembe for around 9 years now and get much enjoyment from it, I have even brought it to school on occasions and played for classes. Thes instruments have an amazing sound to them that just makes you want to dance, it's almost hypnotic. Picture from: djembedrumsforsale.com (This is the actual Djembe that I own.)
